West African EITI Implementing countries met together for the first EITI West Africa Conference 10-12 September in Abudja.
At the opening of the conference, Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua gave this message: "The Nigerian experience shows that there is a sense in which we can talk of blood oil.
Tuesday 29 January President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of Nigeria approved the appointment of former ASUU President, Prof Assisi Asobie as Chairman of the National Stakeholder Working Group (NSWG) of NEITI.
In his speach at the inauguration of the new steering committee (NSWG), President Yar’Adua expressed his governments' continued support of the EITI.

The law sets up a very elaborate framework for revenue transparency and actually imposes criminal sanctions to ensure that accurate payments are made to government. In fact, it imposes criminal liability against companies and regulatory officers in respect of non-payment or underpayments of these revenues.
