Overview of the Extractive Industries

The mining industry of Mali has recently attracted renewed interest with gold its leading export. Other natural resources include uranium and salt.

Status of EITI Implementation

Mali was accepted as a Candidate Country on 27 September 2007. It now has until 9 March 2010 to undertake Validation.

In August 2007, the EITI Steering Committee and Permanent Secretariat were established. A workplan has been published. The first EITI Report was approved on 9 December 2009. Validation was officially launched on 28 September 2009. The final selection of the Validator is expected in March 2010.

Mali has requested an extension to their Validation deadline which will be considered by the International EITI Board when it meets 15-16 April.

Governance of the EITI implementation

The Malian Government established through a Ministry Decree an ambitious governance structure for EITI implementation. Mr Abou-Bakar Traoré, Minister of Mines, leads the EITI multi-stakeholder group. A Supervision Committee, a Steering Committee and a Permanent Secretariat are in place. The Supervision Committee defines the main political lines and strategies of action. The Steering Committee is in charge of the execution of the decisions made. Both Committees count on the participation of stakeholders from government, companies and civil society. They are supported by a Permanent Secretariat. Mr Togola is the Permanent Secretary and serves as focal point for the EITI implementation in Mali.
