Burkina Faso

Candidate country

Overview of the Extractive Industries

Until 2007 mining was not a significant sector in the Burkinabe’s economy. This situation, however, has changed with the development of several gold mines and ongoing exploration. Gold production has increased significantly mainly due to the opening of the Taparko-Boroum mine in late 2007 operated by Société des Mines de Taparko, a subsidiary of High River Gold Mines Ltd of Canada.  There are another three mayor gold mines under development mainly by Canadian and Australian companies. Etruscan Resources Inc. is exploring for copper. Manganese and zinc deposits are also being explored.

Status of EITI Implementation

Burkina Faso is currently a Candidate Country. It now has until 14 May 2011 to undertake Validation. Implementation of the agreed workplan is due to start soon. Burkina Faso applied for an MDTF grant on 14 July 2009. This is pending approval by the World Bank.

Governance of EITI implementation

The EITI structures (a Supervisory Committee and a Steering Committee) guaranteeing stakeholder involvement were set up by presidential decrees No. 2008-810/Pres/PM/MEF/MCE and No. 2008-811/Pres/PM/MEF/MCE of 17 December 2008and nominations from various stakeholder groups sought and confirmed by ministerial decision No. 2009-090/MEF/SG/SP-ITIE and No. 2009-091/MEF/SG/SP-ITIE of 5 March 2009. --- The Government has recently enlarged these committees to stress Civil Society participation. Two decrees to confirm this enlargement are pending with the Council of Ministers and expected to be approved without delay.
